Fire Protection, Fire Design & Damage Prevention

19/04/2023 5:00 PM- 7:00 PM AWST

Richard Choy is the CEO of NATSPEC, a not-for-profit organisation with the objective of improving construction quality.  Richard sits on the Australian Building Codes Board, Australasian BIM Advisory Board, and Standards Australia Council.  Richard was awarded the 2022 Australian Institute of Architect’s Queensland President’s Prize for service to the architectural profession.  Prior to joining NATSPEC, Richard was an Associate Director of an Asia-Pacific architecture practice.

NATSPEC has partnered with DMN to provide the NATSPEC Domestic Specification to DMN WA full members. Richard will be presenting on two key topics: How coordinated documentation protects you and your clients and Fire Protection and Fire Design.

Fire safety is a key component of building regulations globally and is a key consideration for all architects.  Class 1 buildings can have features taken from the bushfire standard even if the project is not in a bushfire zone.  This is becoming more relevant as we look to improve building resilience.  Fire-related design issues for Class 2 buildings are still of concern to regulators, and building surveyors are still finding common errors rife.

Richard will give an overview of this topic before taking questions from the audience.

This awareness session is to promote safety and safe practices around underground (and overhead) assets, a crucial aspect of every building designer and architect's business. Join us for Q&A and further training on the FREE Before You Dig Australia platform where we cover the following topics:

  • About Before You Dig Australia (BYDA)
  • How and why damage occurs
  • What you can do to stay safe and avoid damages
  • The importance of safe excavation
  • Safe work practices
  • Legislative and Duty of Care requirements
  • How the referral BYDA service works
  • How to lodge a free BYDA enquiry

Homebase, Subiaco Function Room. Refreshments and networking after the session
