Air Tightness and Its Impact on Star Ratings

NatHERS will change when improved building air tightness is treated as a valid energy savings strategy along with other envelope measures. A key distinction is that assumptions made in the assessment must be verified in real life by a blower door test. There are major opportunities here, but also risks. Learn more about how the process will work, what a test involves and how much it costs. Importantly, learn how to take reasonable projections and make them a reality. Hear a special perspective on the U.K.’s experience with the same transition – what worked for the industry and what didn’t.

Air Tightness and Its Impact on Star Ratings

21/06/2023 | 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM (AEST)

OVERVIEW:

NatHERS will change when improved building air tightness is treated as a valid energy savings strategy along with other envelope measures. A key distinction is that assumptions made in the assessment must be verified in real life by a blower door test. There are major opportunities here, but also risks. Learn more about how the process will work, what a test involves and how much it costs. Importantly, learn how to take reasonable projections and make them a reality. Hear a special perspective on the U.K.’s experience with the same transition – what worked for the industry and what didn’t.

Who should attend and why:

NatHERS assessors, energy consultants, air tightness testers, and builders should attend so they understand the coming opportunity for cost-effective improvements in NatHERS assessments and real-world outcomes.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn about the impact of air tightness on NatHERS star ratings as an untapped opportunity.
  • Learn how to make reasonable assumptions without over-promising.
  • Learn simple design and construction strategies for cost-effective gains in air tightness.
  • Learn requirements in the NCC related to air tightness and ventilation.
  • Learn valuable lessons from the U.K.’s experience with this same transition in regulation.

SPEAKER:

Sean Maxwell

Sean Maxwell leads the Australian and New Zealand branches of the Air Tightness Testing and Measurement Association. Sean has led dozens of trainings for builders, project teams, and consultants to get a better handle on the practice of building more airtight buildings. Leading hundreds of blower door tests over nearly two decades, his experience in diagnostics lends wisdom to his consulting work which focuses on design reviews.
