2023 Turkey Study Tour

 


 

OVERVIEW:

Join us in 2023 for a spectacular tour to Turkey. Past members of DMN who have travelled to South America, Europe, Japan and most recently Vietnam on previous DMN International study tours have thoroughly enjoyed these in the past.  This 15 day architectural guided tour will take you on a journey through old and new Turkey starting off in old Instanbul and travelling through to Cappadocia, Konya, Izmir and much more, finishing in new Istanbul. Meet local designers and architects who will share their knowledge of the country and lead you through some of their unique buildings, museums and so much more. This International Study Tour has been the foundation of many lifelong friendships amongst our members and we look forward to welcoming new travellers to join us in what is going to be a bucket list experience.

DAY 1 – ISTANBUL ARRIVAL DAY
Arrive in Istanbul, meeting the tour guide at the airport to transfer and check you in to your hotel. An introduction lecture on the historical development of Istanbul up to the present will be given after everybody is checked in followed by a welcome drink and dinner at a panaromic restaurant.

 

 

DAY 2 – ISTANBUL : OLD CITY PART - BYZANTINE & OTTOMAN PERIODS

Full day tour ; the development of the historical part of Istanbul in the 19th and 20 centuries, urban and housing developments. 

  • Byzantine Hippodrome : Hippodrome of Constantinople in the Sultanhamet Square was used as the sporting and social activities during the Byzantine Empire.
  • Topkapi Palace : Known as New Palace as the residence of the Ottoman Sultans. Construction began in 1459 and after the end of Ottoman Empire in 1923 it turned to a museum in 1924.  

Lunch will be served at a local traditional restaurant then continue touring with;

  • Underground Cistern :Basilic Cistern as the largest cistern built beneath the the city 150 mt away from St.Sophia in the 6th century. Recently re-opened after a complete restoration by the Istanbul Municipality.
  • St.Sophia : World Wonder major cultural and historical structure of Istanbul. It was a Greek Orthodox Church from 360 AD until the conquest of Constantinople till 1453.
  • Grand Covered Bazaar : Oldest covered bazaar with 61 streets and 4000 shops.
  • Süleymaniye Mosque : A unique structure from the 16th century, built by the great architect Sinan.

Overnight in Istanbul

 

DAY 3 – ISTANBUL – ANKARA COACH DRIVE 445 KM

After breakdast we will leave this beautiful town and drive to the capital city Ankara which is the heart of Turkey. The important architectural and historical places will be visited;

  • ANITKABIR: The mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK, the founder and the first president of Turkey. The mausoleum is one of the highlights of the country with it architecture and history.
  • Etnography Museum
  •  Ankara Museum Of Republic

Meeting and presentation by the Chamber Of Architects will be arranged (day and time tba) 

Dinner and overnight in Ankara.

 

 

DAY 4 – ANKARA – KONYA  COACH DRIVE 258 KM    

After breakfast at our hotel we will head to south to Konya city. The city is the largest city of the country located in the central Turkey. The classical ancient world it was named s-as Iconium. Konya is one of the oldest settlements of the country and ruled by Hittites, Phrygians, Greeks, Persians, Romans, Seljuk Turks and Ottomans. Now the city has many innovative urban projects and Konya Metropolitan Stadium is one of them. It is used for football matches primarly and a part of a sport complex on the outskirts of the city, a part of the Konya Olympic Villlage. The capacity is 42000 all seated and it is totally covered. Konya also houses the mytsterious poets, sufis, philosophers and  world famous Whirling Derwishes.
Dinner and overnight in Konya.

 

 
DAY 5 – KONYA - CAPPADOCIA COACH DRIVE 223 KM 

Departure from Konya and drive to Nevsehir city. En route we will visit Gümüsler Monastry with its impressive shape. Arrive at Cappadocia, a legendary and unique landscape in the world with its iconic pherry chimneys, underground cities and valleys. Upon arrival we will visit Göreme Open Air musuem and Underground City Of Derinkuyu (or Kaymakli). Return to the hotel for check in and refreshing.

Dinner and overnight in Cappadocia.

  • Arrive in Istanbul and stay 2 nights
  • 1 night in Ankara
  • 1 night in Konya
  • 3 nights in Cappadocia
  • 3 nights in Kusadasi
  • 4 nights in Istanbul then depart back to Australia
